DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES AT 16

From an early age, I have been committed to developing my knowledge of health, fitness and nutrition. This obsession was inspired and motivated by a deep resolve to overcome my very own health struggles with was love after the first rep, and, the rest is history.

I didn’t understand what a proper diet or training program was, but regardless I made significant improvements to my overall health and body composition.

DRIVEN TO LEARN

Driven by my passion for improving my health and becoming a better version of myself, I left school to pursue a degree in Nutrition at Queen’s University Belfast.

I spent five years learning about human physiology, nutrition and food technology (food processing and manufacturing). Since then I’ve gone on to complete many other professionally recognized qualifications specific to my role. These include a postgraduate diploma in public health promotion, Certified Sports Nutritionist with the International Society of Sports Nutrition and accredited for body composition assessment through The International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK)
Being armed with this information I was able to hand my diabetes much more effectively and at the same time make incredible changes to my body composition and performance. I wanted to prove to myself and others that diabetes wasn’t going to hold me back. Having seen firsthand how it crippled many others, I was adamant I wouldn’t be another statistic.

GRADUATE WORK LIFE

My newly acquired knowledge, combined with my passion and vocation for improving my own and other peoples’ health led me to work for the National Health Service’s Regional Health Improvement Team.

My role was to educate and empower members of the public on how to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle through sound nutrition, exercise and lifestyle options.

I worked specifically in areas of economic disadvantage, which proved extremely challenging, given the lack of health education in these particular areas.

BEING RECOGNISED

It wasn’t long until my knowledge on nutrition and exercise science became recognised. Individuals, whom I previously looked up to for advice and motivation were now asking me for help.

During this stage, after years of eating and exercising, I fell into competitive body building. I competed as a top-level national bodybuilder, competing and successfully winning shows on both a local and international level – including Junior Mr Northern Ireland, Mr Universe and Mr Britain.

Bodybuilding was a podium to display my hard work and prove diabetes wrong! I’m aware that not everyone’s goal is to be a top national level bodybuilder, but when you take into account the physical conditioning aspects required for these competitions it represents the pinnacle of physical development.

I QUIT THE HEALTH SERVICE AND SET UP MY FIRST  FITNESS BUSINESS

Due to being overwhelmed with requests for training and diet advice, I decided to quit the health service and launch my first business, Clear Cut Health and Fitness, a nutrition and exercise consultancy service.

It was hugely successful. I took my knowledge and used it to help many clients make life-changing transformations with their health and bodies. I coached many successful bodybuilders and physique athletes, many of whom who took gold, landed sponsorship deals and ended up on the covers of some of the world’s biggest fitness publications.

INDUSTRY EXPERT

Fast forward 12 years later I now educate thousands of personal trainers each year through my public seminars, workshops and keynote at some of the world’s most prestigious health and fitness exhibitions.

I actively write for many the world’s biggest fitness publications, including Muscle & Fitness, Flex and Train International. I’ve also written exclusively on fitness for the Daily Mail and other national newspapers.
I host the famous fitness podcast Elite Muscle Radio which has reached #1 on the iTunes Health chart several times. The show features some of the best minds and highly regarded experts within the industry, all of whom I have established strong networks and relationships.
I also work alongside Genetic Supplements as their resident nutrition expert for product development.

AUTHOR – THE DIABETIC MUSCLE & FITNESS GUIDE

The current body of information on strength training, bodybuilding and performance in people living with diabetes is limited. Having spent a huge proportion of my life learning about nutrition and exercise. Never-mind achieving significant levels of success with my bodybuilding and strength career, all while living and dealing with Type 1 diabetes.

After much demand, I’ve compiled all my knowledge and experience into the first ever-comprehensive muscle building and fat loss resource for people living with diabetes. The book has sold 1000s of copies worldwide and has been quoted by experts in the field as a ‘Game Changer’.

This book provides answers to many of the questions and concerns resonating in the minds of individuals living with diabetes who love training and want to create the strongest best-looking and healthiest version of themselves.

Unlike most personal trainers I realise that everyone is unique. One-size fits all approach doesn’t work when it comes to the complex issues surrounding diet and exercise.
I do not rely on the latest exercise gimmicks or fad diets that commonly plague the health and fitness industry providing false hope and merely produce temporary results. The advice I deliver is evidence based and supported by recognised qualifications, hours of continuous personal development and self-study on health, nutrition and exercise science.
I commit myself fully 24/7 to each and every one of my clients by offering expert advice and continuous words of motivation. In fact, many of my clients will tell you I’m never off their backs.
Regardless of your age, gender or level of ability, I train with everybody, whether you’re a mother of two, a busy career professional, aspiring fitness model or even a top-level athlete. All my clients share one thing in common, relying on me to make them look, feel and perform better.

I offer both online and real life personal training in Belfast Northern Ireland. With a strong academic background and a proven track record for achieving results, you can rest assure the personal training and coaching you’ll receive will be of the highest standard. My goal is to help you become the best version of yourself in record time.
Please appreciate there is an application process and waiting list for all my coaching services.

I can afford, to be honest – I attract way more coaching applicants than I have time to work with, so I can afford to tell you honestly if I feel I can’t help you or not. I limit the number of coaching spaces purposefully so that I have time to develop other areas of the business. Plus, I have a preference for more free time and flexibility over extra income.

I also coach and mentor upcoming personal trainers, including, education on nutrition, exercise physiology, strength training and business development.

After finishing my nutrition degree I quickly came to realise that Northern Ireland lacked a top class personal training service. If anything the personal training market was over-saturated with inexperienced and uneducated trainers.

No matter if I’m working with someone on a one to one basis or mentoring them over a longer period of time I pride myself on delivering intelligent nutritional advice combined with the highest level of strength and fitness coaching.
