6 Powerful Tips Online Fitness Businesses Need to Thrive in Chaos

Do you have a roadblock that seems insurmountable? Find out how to turn that block into an opportunity when times get tough.
There’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel.
At the time of writing, it’s looking like we’re on the cusp of coming out of lockdown, at least in the UK. Now, there are plenty of challenges that still await you if and when we do.
But first…I want to congratulate you.
You’ve managed to survive this absolute tidal wave of a catastrophe. And right now, you’re hopefully gearing up to come back stronger than ever.
I just have a little warning for you.
Now is not the time to get complacent. There’s always the possibility that we could get hit with a second wave in this pandemic. And if that happens, we might end up right back in lockdown. If that happens, you need to know how to protect yourself.
And that’s what I’m going to share in this article. Let’s kick off with an introduction of…
The Drama Triangle
During a crisis, people adopt a similar mindset. It’s called the Drama Triangle. This triangle is important when you consider your own mindset, as you’ll see in a minute.
First, I want you to picture your world…
You’re doing everything right. You’re making money and helping people. You’re doing good in the world, right?
But suddenly, through no fault of your own, the government says that it’s time to close your gym….again! Maybe it’s for the greater good. Maybe they have things that they need to take care of in your area to prevent the spread of the virus.
Whatever the case may be, there’s another drama for you to deal with and you need to get yourself on the right corner of the triangle.
Now, picture an inverted triangle with the “victim” at the bottom point, “aggressor” at the upper left corner, and “rescuer” at the upper right corner.

You could allow yourself to feel victimised by the situation, which puts you squarely in the victim corner. It’s hard to not feel angry or upset. You may even feel sad or helpless because the power over your reality is out of your hands.
In a situation like this, it may be the government or authorities that took that power and so they become the aggressor in this situation. You’re not likely to land in this corner during this particular situation.
And finally, we have the rescuer corner.
This is where you want to be because it means you’re in a position to help other people.
Think about it like this. People want someone to say, “It’s going to be okay” or “Everything’s alright.”
You need to be the person who shows them the way. When you’re a rescuer, you’re a leader who brings value and cuts through uncertainty.
So…how do you become a rescuer? Take a look at these tips that will ensure you’re in the right corner of the Drama Triangle if we end up getting hit by a second wave.
Tip #1 – Allow Yourself to Feel
When you’re caught in a situation that threatens your business, it brings a lot of feelings to the surface. But the people who thrive are the ones who allow themselves to feel.
When feelings of rage, frustration, and despair come to the surface, you must allow yourself to feel it. Breathe through it.
If you’re into journaling, write it all down. Or talk it out. It doesn’t really matter how you let it all out. But you need to give yourself permission to feel those emotions before you can move forward.
A lot of entrepreneurs (males especially) get annoyed at themselves when they feel scared or uncertain. They consider ‘emotions’ a sign of weakness. Thinking like this will only spiral you into disordered thinking and reactivity. You must first accept your emotions, appreciate what they are telling you and then take necessary action.
Tip #2 – Get Moving
We’re in the fitness industry, so one of the best ways to process those feelings is to get moving. Get into that weights room or hit a bag until those emotions run its course.
And if you’re still feeling it, do it again.
Rinse and repeat until you can move past those emotions and onto the next step.
Maybe you don’t have access to a weight room during the lockdown. If that’s the case, you can get moving differently and tackle that big project. You put it off for months or maybe even years.
Maybe you wanted to cultivate an online program, but you never had time. Well, now you have the time and energy to throw at that project.
Tip #3 – Find Your Stillness
Finding your stillness or centre is like being in the eye of a tornado. Chaos and destruction may reign on the outside, but there’s a quiet place inside you that you need to find.
This stillness is when you can remember the present moment. You put your hand on your heart and feel your heartbeat. You can feel your feet on the ground.
When you’re in this place, you remember that you have everything you need to make it to the next moment. And the moment after that.
We often trip ourselves up when we think too many steps ahead. We linger on those “what ifs” and then we find ourselves in mind drama.
This is when mind stories take hold.
Mind stories are what happens when you get caught in a vortex of questioning past decisions and worry about the future. But to thrive, we all need to find our centre.
Good decisions are not made in a reactive, stressed state. And reactive decisions cost you money.
So, before you make decisions about your business and your future, you need to get to that quiet place and stop the stories.
Tip #4 – Preserve Your Current Clientele
A lot of the clients I speak to think they need to focus on new sales. But in times of crisis your first focus should be on preservation.
Preservation means keeping your current clientele happy. You want to make sure that they’re still getting the service that you promised them at the start. But on top of that, you need to start adapting your service to meet your clientele’s needs.
So, they can’t go to a physical gym right now. Or maybe they don’t have kettlebells or other equipment at home to continue training. That doesn’t mean that your coaching opportunities end.
Think of it this way…
They already know you. You already know them. They know your system.
All you need to do is change the context of what you’re delivering so that they can get a result.
Just because everybody is staying in doesn’t mean that their resulting needs change. They still want fat loss, health, and productivity. They want a proper mindset and they want somebody to guide them to it.
That’s where you come in.
Once you’ve stabliazed your current client base, you’ll be in a much better position to focus on acquiring new sales!
Tip #5 – Stop Manufacturing Fear
We all have the same worries right now. But if you keep them inside, your mind starts manufacturing fear.
Fear manufacturing starts for a few reasons:
- Hanging around the wrong people who only focus on the problem, not the soloution
- You’re afraid of rejection
- You’re afraid of exploiting people and being seen as an opportunist.
- You’re paying too much attention to other trainers and the fears that they have. If you’re not careful, those fears can carry over into your own business.
First, you need to start talking about the lockdown and the problems associated with it. Talk about the overconsumption of calories and alcohol. Or the effects of inactivity and depression in the body.
Yes, it’s going to make them feel worse. But not being in shape and looking after their health puts them at risk and they need to confront it.
Also, let me tell you that people have savings and they’re bored – not broke. I know for a fact that there’s a lot of money sitting right there across a range of different target markets.
Lastly, remember that you aren’t that “other” trainer. You don’t need to give away free workouts because people still value you. They’re buying the transformation that you can provide.
So, stop manufacturing fear because your clients need you as much (if not more) as you need them.
Tip #6 – Adopt the Deliverables in Your Program
When you coach people, you give them a combination of things. You write out a diet plan, a training program, and some kind of goalposts. Your clients get these deliverables so that they can facilitate a change.
Next, you typically have a timescale for this kind of thing like a 90-day program.
People are staying in and consuming more stuff digitally. So, why not give them something healthy to consume?
You can give nutrition plans, training plans, and mindset plans. You could probably think of other lifestyle elements and services to leverage in there, too like Pilates, yoga, or training talks from notable experts.
This is the perfect time where you can train people or educate them a little more. Go in there and educate them on how to eat and how to train.
Create presentations and host webinars because that’s what our clients are doing right now. They’re educating their own client base in the time they have now. They’re creating videos that can help problem solve questions and challenges to utilise later.
So, why aren’t you doing the same thing?
Protect Yourself if the Second Wave Comes
You’ve managed to make it through one crisis. But there’s a possibility that right now we’re in a calm before the second storm.
It’s critical that you protect yourself now so that you’re prepared if a second wave comes in this pandemic.
The above tips will help you to position yourself as the rescuer who can guide others through tough times. Use them today and you’ll be ready for whatever tomorrow might throw at you.
