How To Go From Working a Full Time Job To Being A Personal Trainer (without losing your home or going broke)
An important question I get asked all the time is…
How do I transition from a full-time job into a personal trainer?
First things first…
GET CLEAR ON WHY YOU WANT TO LEAVE YOUR JOB AND TRANSITION INTO RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS.
You might work in a job that doesn’t inspire you, dislike your boss and hate the fact your financial income and personal growth is capped. A large part of you wants to make the jump. But, you’re not sure how to market yourself, sell and deep down know setting up and running your own business is a huge risk. It might not work, you run the risk of failing, looking like a fool, and ending up back in a 9:00-5:00 with a massive amount of debt.
Look, I get it. Making a jump from a stable career into a self-employed career is risky. But, understand this,
You grow most between the border of support and challenge.
Challenge exists in terms of marketing yourself, selling, and being vulnerable. Support comes from mentorship, and having the right people around you.
I want to share three very important principles that are going to help you make the safest transition from self-employed to profitable and secure fitness business owner. You ready?
If you’re not receiving financial support from your partner or parents, you are going to need to dedicate a period of time to saving money from your current career so you have what ‘rainy day money’. This money is going to help you pay the bills, buy food, and invest in education, tools and resources so you can deliver a service.
It’s very important that you have a chunk of capital to utilize. I highly recommend anywhere between 10,000 and 20,000. That will buy you enough time and important resources for at least six months to a year, depending on your lifestyle. You may have to be a little bit more conservative with nights out and lavish expenditure on fashion, cars, and miscellaneous items that are depreciable.
Every single penny counts. A financial cushion will give you emotional stability as you transition out of and way from full-time employment into running your own fitness business.
The last thing you want is a tone of debt and to be ruled by anxiety. This will make you very impulsive and lead to bad decision making. Stress attracts more stress. Trust me, you’ll be in a far stronger position when your finances are in order.
BEGERS CAN’T BE CHOOSERS
When you first start your fitness business you will have no credibility or trust, unless you’re the partner of somebody who has already established themselves in the fitness industry or you’ve somehow magically appeared to build credibility overnight. The fact of the matter is you’re going to have to start with close friends and family as your customers. These are ideal testimonials. The main goal is to get testimonials and social proof that you can do what you say you can do and you can then leverage those to inspire the public to invest in you, along with your social media content.
It’s very important that you aren’t overly fussy at the start with the clients that you take on. You need the experience of working with different types of people and goals to determine what you don’t want and what you do want in a coach/client relationship.
Essentially, you can leverage all of these clients into social proof (testimonials) and cash.
GET REALLY GOOD AT SALES
Invest your time in watching videos, reading books, and doing courses that teach you how to sell.
Selling is the lifeblood of your business. If you’re not driving income, you’re going to lose.
What makes you really good at sales – is being able to articulate your customers problems better than they can. You need to go deep and connect with what they’re feeling. Once you’ve done that, then and only then can you prescribe them your solution to take them away from pain and towards pleasure.
Do this correctly and I guarantee you will generate a secure income and grow your fitness business.
