How To Respond When Clients and Friends Unfollow You On Social Media

An issue that causes a lot of stress and confusion with many fitness entrepreneurs Is the idea of losing followers. Whether it’s on Facebook or Instagram, it really doesn’t matter.

Nowadays it’s becoming increasingly easy to take a hatchet and chop a friendship like it never existed. It’s so easy to go and click the unfollow or unfriend button discretely and remove someone from your life.

Let’s be honest, you – the person reading this article have unfollowed people over the course of time?

Am I right?

Your values and interests change, people get boring and you get fed up of people talking continuous crap.

When you discover that someone has unfollowed you question yourself…

“Why did they unfollow me?”

“Is my content crap?”

“Have I done something to annoy them?”

When someone unfollows you it can be frustrating especially if the individual’s well achieved. As a result, it can take up head space and a lot of energy trying to figure it all out.

Should I unfollow them back?

Thinking emotionally like this holds you back from growing and building your business.

The next time someone unfollows you, keep these points I mind.



The first thing you’ve got to ask yourself is this…

“Is there anything I could have possibly said or put up to offend this individual?”

Quite often when you put up social media content, there’s always a couple of people in the back of your head you secretly want to see the post. Especially if you’re trying to prove something or go on a rant.

The problem with this is it becomes a mental game of war back and forth, which wastes so much energy.

Understand if you’ve said something that has been intended to trigger someone, then there’s a high probability they’re going to see it and unfollow you.



Ask yourself…

“Have I really been putting effort into my content?”

If the answer is no, what do you expect? The person who unfollowed you may not find value in your content anymore. This should inspire you to re-evaluate the quality and consistency of your content.

If you think your content is good, don’t worry about it.

One of the most important things you can do whenever you have the likes of an email list is regularly clean the list up. In the marketing world, it’s called list hygiene and its purpose is to improve the quality of the users on your list.

One person, or even a handful of people unfollowing you is irrelevant when you consider there are seven billion other people living on the planet.

Talk about first world problems?

If you believe in yourself that much, you will know that the work you do, your knowledge and experience is enough to transform your customer’s life, and there are plenty more fish in the sea.

If somebody does unfollow you, there’s a high probability they were never going to be a customer anyway.

In order to assess whether your content has been really offensive in some way, shape or form, reach out and say, “Hey, how are things going?” and see what kind of reaction you get.

If you’ve ruffled somebody’s feathers, they’re likely to say.



People you know may have started using Instagram follow and unfollow services to grow their social media following. You may have been unlucky and been unfollowed by a bot without the owner of the account knowing.


If somebody does unfollow you, don’t sweat it.

There are plenty of other people out there who will replace them, and if anything, you’ve just cleaned up your list and kept the people who really value following you.

If somebody unfollows you, that’s their decision. The fact of the matter is, we all do it (including me).
