How To Respond When Someone Copies Your Work In The Fitness Industry
If you run your own fitness business you will know what it feels like to be copied. It doesn’t feel good. People take credit for your ideas, hard work and essentially monetize from it. A large part of you wants to go on a rant and call them out, whilst another part of you doesn’t want to look unprofessional.
I’ve been subject to my fair share of copying over the years. People have copied my nutrition and training programs, workshop material, elements of this website, my Facebook adverts, and even the finer elements of my branding like font choice and colours. I’ve even had my car number plate and clothing style copied ha-ha.
Anyhow, before I go any further, it is important to understand the difference between copying and curating.
Copying is taking somebody’s stuff, copying it word for word, not giving them credit and passing it off as your own. This is disrespectful.
Curating is taking somebody’s stuff, looking at what you like vs. don’t like, then adding your own unique twist. It’s perfectly ok to take inspiration from other people and curate. Sometimes your concept might be similar, or it could be vastly different. The fact of the matter is, you aren’t ashamed to say that you were inspired by someone else’s work and are more than willing to credit them.
I want to share 3 key things you need to know about copying and plagiarism in the fitness industry. This will help you respond better and minimize distractions.
PEOPLE ONLY COPY WHAT THEY SEE.
Just the other day, one of my mentoring clients told me another fitness business owner up the road has been copying his every move. Specifically, his lead generation strategies and content ideas. I reminded him of this simple analogy which settled his anger and got him back in play.
This info graphic puts everything into perspective. Other people are only copying what they see on the surface. That being your tactics. NOT the most important stuff like… the thinking, network and life lessons behind it all.
Whoever is copying you doesn’t have your foundation. Use that to your advantage and create faster than they can copy!
DON’T BE THE SHITER VERSION OF SOMEONE ELSE
Original work is highly sought after and valuable. Copied work is not. When you copy someone’s work, you’re basically a shiter version of them or their product.
What would you rather have a fake or real Rolex? A real LV bag or a real one?
YOU CAN ONLY PROTECT THE EXECUTION OF YOUR IDEA. NOT THE IDEA ITSELF.
You don’t own your idea. Only the execution.
As George Patton once said, “A good plan, violently executed right now, is better than the perfect plan next week.”
If you have a great idea for a product or service get it out into the marketplace as soon as possible before someone else copies it. Get good at creating and taking action quicker than other people can copy.
While your idea may not be perfect first time around. You can always refine it later. Become a master of speed and execution. Get your ideas into the marketplace faster than anyone else and deliver on what you said you were going to do.
